To best explain affiliate marketing, let's reference wikipedia for their definition and illustration:

"Affiliate Marketing is an Internet-based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. It is an application of crowdsourcing......

Affiliate marketing—using one website to drive traffic to another—is a form of online marketing, which is frequently overlooked by advertisers. While search engines, e-mail, and website syndication capture much of the attention of online retailers, affiliate marketing carries a much lower profile. Still, affiliates continue to play a significant role in e-retailers' marketing strategies."

As you can see from the illustration to the left, your objective is to have others (affiliates) who are actively promoting your products or services in exchange for a commission for each sale they make through their affiliate site or through an affiliate link back to your site.  When a sale is made via an affiliate referral, the site tracks where that sale came from and compensates the affiliate for that sale at the agreed commission.

Everybody Wins

The right affiliates can literally explode your business.  The affiliate is responsible for doing their own marketing and advertising to generate sales and have the advantage of not having to maintain an investory, ship or deliver the goods and services they promote.

The business owner wins in that they have no cost in additional marketing or advertising and generate sales that they otherwise would have never had.  They don't pay a salary, workmen's comp or insurances they would pay with a paid sales employee.  They simply pay the agreed to commission AFTER the sale is made and normally after the return policy on that product or service has expired.
